The goal of this page is to make local Personal Information Management (PIM) content available on multiple computers and mobile devices by converting it to Western PIM (wPIM)data. For the purposes of these discussions wPIM data consists of email, calendar, contacts and task lists. This is accomplished through Western Related PDA Software; NotifyLink, Sun Java Outlook Connector (SJOC) and native synchronization software related to your device e.g. Active Sync, BlackBerry Desktop Manager, iTunes etc.
(Note: Prior to running any synchronization software, you should back up any important data on the systems you are working with.)
Before we can assist or make any recommendations it is important to understand your current situation and the possible end states which best meet your needs. Listed below are four of the most common scenarios which we see.
|PIM - current situation||wPIM - end state|
|Email only||NotifyLink (wPIM data)|
|Cradle (email & local PIM data)||Cradle ( wPIM data)|
NotifyLink is the most complete solution providing “over the air” synchronization of all your wPIM data to your PDA. This service is only available to faculty and staff for a nominal fee.
Please note that individuals are typically managing their calendar data at a local desktop level. Therefore it is recommended that they synchronize their local desktop client with Western's Java Enterprise System (JES) via either the SJOC or Lightning prior to running NotifyLink.
Not a faculty or staff member? Don’t want to pay for the NotifyLink service? You can still accomplish synchronization of wPIM data to your PDA using SJOC and native synchronization software related to your device e.g. Active Sync, BlackBerry Desktop Manager, iTunes etc.
Is access to email enough? If so then it is unlikely that you require any additional software since most PDA’s will provide access to your Western email through standard email protocols (IMAP/POP).
